What’s your pen name and tell me about the books you like to write.
My pen name is Jen Ellwyn and I am a proud horror and fantasy author. I have many short stories published in horror anthologies and I also engineer audiobooks!
What part of your stories are hardest to write and why?
Beginnings tend to stump me more than anything. Kicking a story off the right way is the key to the reader’s enjoyment.
What kind of reaction/biggest emotion are you wanting from your readers?
I want my readers to second-guess their assumptions and change how they think about something. For instance, liking a character to later fearing them, or fearing a character to later liking them.
If two radio hosts were having a heated debate about something in your novels, what would it be and why?
Hopefully it would be a plot theory argument. Was it real or was it all a dream?
What actor/actress would play your leading characters?
Honestly, I think it would be fantastic if Andy Serkis played a creepy creature character I wrote.
What song would play in the background of the first scene to your novel?
‘Dark Night of the Soul’ by Philip Wesley
What is your main character NOT supposed to do?
Depends on the situation. Not dying is a good start.
Who believed in your goals no matter what and how did they support you?
My mother, who supported my writing even back when I scrawled horse stories in notebooks with crayons.
How do you improve your craft?
I’m a big advocate for learning to write through fanfiction and literate roleplay, where I grew my roots. There is much to be learned by writing with others and having mutual fans of a tv show or book give feedback on your stories. It’s a lovely community.
What book do you want to read next?
My friend Johnny Worthen has an epic fantasy coming out that I’m incredibly excited for!
What are your 2022 goals:
To finish my debut apocalyptic novel, ‘The Night Wall,’ which explores the stages of grief and the terror of the unknown, especially in the face of death.
