What’s your pen name?

I write under Avery Samson for contemporary/new adult romance and A. Samson for romantic suspense.

Tell me about your most recent story you’re writing and the title.

I’m currently in the middle of releasing Intangible.  It’s the story of a seemingly average small-town veterinarian with an extraordinary gift. That “gift” lands him in the middle of the efforts to rescue a young college student kidnapped by an unknown person for an unknown reason. He assumes finding her will be the end of his involvement, but it throws him into the middle of a race for their lives.

What are you envious of in other writers?

I envy those authors that can keep me guessing to the very end. Especially those that come up with an impossible plot that makes me wonder how they ever came up with it. I love to read a book and be so intrigued by the plot, I have to look up the author just so I can marvel at their talent.

What do you kick bootie in with your writing and everyone else should wish to steal your skill?

I like to think it is character development and the interpersonal relationships between them. I love to write a flawed character, but they have to have a redeeming quality to stay in the story. In my newest series, Knox is probably my favorite character. Yes, he’s a jerk, but he also cares deeply about those he sees as his family.

What other book do you wish you had written yourself and why?

That is a long and winding list. However, I remember when I finished The Fourth Estate by Jeffrey Archer thinking there was no way I could have written that but I wish I could. It was intriguing, smart and included a world I knew very little about. That also goes for most Ken Follett books.

What is something you’ve learned in your writing journey?

I learned early to be patient. Writing is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. I would like to still be writing years from now, so I need to pace myself so I don’t burn out. If I can’t enjoy this wild ride, there’s no reason to be on it.

What is the most amount of words you’ve written in a day?

Around 10,000 but that was an incredibly productive fluke. I usually push for around 2000. Some days I have to be happy with one well worded paragraph!

Do you have a writing routine? Tell me about it.

I usually write after lunch for about 4 hours. I’m a very visual person, so my office walls are covered in story boards, cover photos, bookcases, and artwork. My desk is full of notes for my WIP, business reminders, a whiteboard with my word counts on it, snacks, and a bunch of tiny bottles of whiskey. Not sure about that last part! I turn on whatever playlist inspires me and deep dive into whatever I’m writing today. I usually have a handful of stories in various stages of completion all the time.

Who is your biggest fan and why?

My family is very supportive, but my daughter, Rachel, is my biggest fan. She is my alpha and beta reader, cover designer, website designer, swag creator, and everything else I come up with. She plans to be my PA at any signing events she can get too and often talks me off the proverbial cliff. No way could I do this without her.

What is a “warning” you’d give to a reader about your writing and why?

If you don’t like to cry, steer clear. If that’s your thing, then dive in. I suggest the wedding scene from Hers to Crave. I cried every time I edited it and I wrote the dang thing! Every. Single. Time!

How many books have you read this year? Which was your favorite?

I’m working on 110 so far (down from last year.) I would say my favorite this year was Blind Tiger by Sandra Brown. I have been an avid fan of hers for over 30 years. It’s a sexy mystery set in the roaring 20s. Umm, find your own dinner, I’m reading!

Which antagonist is your favorite and why?

Wow, I have no idea! Pretty much everyone in Game of Thrones? (The books, I never watched the show.) Most of those characters really did need to die.

Tell me about a book you’d like to advertise here and why?

Intangible. It’s a fun, sexy rollercoaster full of adventure, danger, and intrigue. I think it has something and someone for everyone.She’s being held captive.
