What’s your pen name and tell me about the books you like to write.
I use my real name, Claire Kohler, for my books. I write historical fantasy stories.
What part of your stories are hardest to write and why?
The action sequences are difficult because I tend to write long, poetic sentences, but action needs to be fast-paced.
What kind of reaction/biggest emotion are you wanting from your readers?
I want my readers to relate to the characters and grow with them. My characters have flaws that many people struggle with: self-hatred, self-doubt, shame, etc. I hope that my readers can start to have a better image of themselves as they read about the emotional journeys that my characters are going through.
If two radio hosts were having a heated debate about something in your novels, what would it be and why?
The pronunciation of words and names! I tried to use authentic names and incorporate dialect into my stories to make the stories feel as realistic as possible.
What actor/actress would play your leading characters?
Kaya Scodelario would be my protagonist with Ben Barnes and Chris Hemsworth as the two love interests.
What song would play in the background of the first scene to your novel?
“Rainforest” by Jennifer Thomas.
What is your main character NOT supposed to do?
My main character is an illegitimate midwife with a magical secret who could very well destroy her hometown if she’s not careful. There are many things she’s not supposed to do. As a woman, and an illegitimate one at that, she’s not supposed to question the men around her. She’s not supposed to stand up for herself. She’s not supposed to question her low standing in the town or the abuse of her neighbors. But Briony Fairborn isn’t exactly conventional.
Who believed in your goals no matter what and how did they support you?
My parents have been wonderful supporters of my writing dreams throughout my life. They’ve encouraged and read my work in its many stages.
How do you improve your craft?
I research and listen to other self-published authors to see what they did well and what they wish they had done differently. I read about writing craft as well.
What book do you want to read next?
I really admire Sarra Cannon for her wonderful YouTube channel for authors, and I want to read her book entitled Deep Dark Secrets.
What are your 2022 goals:
I want to publish book 2 and have at least a rough draft for book 3 in my series.
