Maria Vermisoglou

What’s your pen name and tell me about the books you like to write.

My name is Maria Vermisoglou, nicknamed “the witch author.” I draw my inspiration from books (duh!), movies, travels and even video games. My passion? Stripped socks, tea and chocolate! Who am I? I’m a fantasy and paranormal author who loves to write about every unusual creature there is. Mostly witches because they’re peculiar, enchanting and kickass characters. Witches are usually portrayed as evil, so I wanted to change the way people thought of them. They can be good, loving and save the world while wearing heels.

What’s a secret your hero or heroine might keep from one another?

Depends on the book, situation and character. It can be a big secret like “I’m a witch” or it can be a stupid little thing like “I’m planning your birthday party and I want to see the surprise on your face when the time comes!” Magical creatures are more likely to have a big secret linked to their identity and will do everything to keep it a secret including wiping someone’s memory rather non-magical creatures. It’s not always the case, and each character is different in their responses.

What is your first sentence of your most recent novel?

It was a sunny morning in an otherwise chilly winter.

What celebrity do you think would like you books most and why?

I have no idea. Anyone who likes fantasy worlds, magical creatures and unexpected twists will like my stories.

What time of day do you do your best writing and why?

Afternoon and night hours because the house is silent.

What are you biggest obstacles in writing and how do you overcome them?

I’m a pantser, which means I make no plan about my stories, nor do I know where they will lead me, so half of the time, I don’t know what’s going on. But I can reassure you, it’s a fun adventure and all pieces go to where they’re supposed to be.

The real obstacle is how to market my books and reach readers who enjoy them. I try things, learn from my mistakes and hopefully, one day, I’ll be an expert.

Which character would you take on a date and why?

Yuri because I want to see how mermen interact with the real world. To have the ability to be part of both human and marine world is a gift and there is much to learn from them.

Tell me why you’re passionate about writing.

Why not? To carry a kaleidoscope of worlds in your head and see the characters chat about what you should write and what not is fascinating!

What book do you want to read next?

I want to read a book about fairytales and witches. Not the ones who fly in brooms. Something peculiar, unique and quirky.

What are your 2022 goals:

Wrap The Cursed Girl series and start the mystery series about genius people.
