Review #609

I’ve loved all of Abby’s books but this one is my least fave so far. It’s not light or breezy or an enjoyable beach read. It’s serious, heart wrenching, heavy, difficult and realistic. Definitely not a romcom vibe. Because of that, I’m unsure how to rate it since I went into it with different expectations. The author did a great job making me feel the feels, which is indicative of great writing and story. But none of the emotions were positive. I was getting depressed during the novel and wanted it to be over. I guess I’ll give it a 4/5 stars.

Strengths- family relationships, lots of animals & likable main characters. it’s obvious the author did a bunch of research on the sensitive medical topics.

Negatives- no steam. Boo!

These were my thoughts live while listening: After two hours- it’s cute but honestly a bit boring so far. The vet and animal bits are the best part but Xavier’s personality is so dull & their conversation is quite mundane.

Sometimes there’s a bit too much summarizing.

About 60% of the way through it’s getting a bit repetitive and monotonous.

Im not sure if it’s a good type of frustration or not but I’m just agitated listening to this. There’s a lot of mundane stuff described like grabbing a glass of water. Which is unnecessary. And their situation or not being able to be together is just irritating. Like I feel for them but also am just angry at that author for putting them in this position.

Also- the words peered and gazed was used waaay too often.

The end was satisfying to a point, predictable, but also left open so … idk … this isn’t one I’d want to reread in the future.
