I feel guilty because the intent was a first ever bookclub buddy read with my husband. I picked it out for the holiday season despite the third person narrative (not my preference). I was happy with the beginning but quickly lost interest and 75% of the way through became too bored to finish.

My random notes while reading:

The first chapter was extremely short but already has great prose and a unique voice that has me excited for more.

“There are times in a (wo)man’s life, when no knock on any door will divert them from the thing at hand, in particular when that thing is a goose feather pen, flying across the page, spitting ink.”

“Books had always been the thing to save them.”

I don’t like that chapter 6 jumps PoV to Forster’s head.

At the halfway mark I’m more bored than the beginning and not a huge fan of his character or Eleanor either.

In chapter 24 I’m wondering if any of these accounts of pagerism & suing are legit historically.

I’m unsure if the author, Samantha Silva, is attempting to mirror him to Scrooge because he’s being “un generous” by refusing to continually pay his relatives debts. But honestly it’s their own fault for taking advantage of his fortune for so long, so I don’t feel as if it’s comparable.

My husband filled me in on the major plot points for the end but I didn’t finish it.
