I stopped at page 116ish or chapter 14.
The cover confuses me a little. I’m unsure what I’m looking at?
Selene Bowers loses parts of her memory when she cats spells and has been for the last 3 years. But she’s still determined to join Henbane Coven which feels like a university. The head witch at her interview doesn’t approve but it sounds like… if Selene can find a familiar and improve her quest, then she will be accepted. I love how she already has a mission and agency and we learn about her world through her interaction within it instead of being told a backstory.
The amount of organization she has to do feels on the border of OCD, so that in itself is giving me some anxiety because of how relatable it is. I read to escape and when a story brings in the neurotic patterns of my everyday life, it’s hard to get into the flow.
Also, I feel like I’m gonna have a hard time with the memory loss component because it’s such a broad topic cognitively, that I’ll be questioning the legitimacy of whether or not her memory loss is accurately portrayed. I’m no expert, but I can see myself second guessing things like “why does she remember xyz and not abc…?” the whole time which isn’t comforting.
This quickly took a very unexpected turn for a “witchy” book that’s getting me excited since I don’t know where the story is going.
She found the familiar way too quickly and easily. Too coincidental.
I already like Nero. Who is at the other end of this magical voice? How would it know when she had entered over his domain on the plane?
Does she have a former life she doesn’t recall?
Sometimes her spells seem too easy and juvenile that she just has to rhyme to make something happen.
I’m extremely confused. First Memnon is obsessively in love with her and the next moment he says he will punish her? I feel like there are too many blanks to fill in.
The plot and the voice are both quite unique. I’m a little annoyed by how many swear words are used in the thoughts. I don’t mind them but they use their value when there are so many.
So now that she’s back to her normal life so abruptly I once again have NO idea where this is going.
SPOILERS.
Page 96 is when her main first goal is accomplished to be accepted into the coven so what is there to happen next? Im still intrigued but feel like I’m hanging onto threads not knowing what the main purpose of the story is
Will it be erotica or mainly fantasy?? I have no clue what to expect
The Memnon guy is creepily possessive so far.
When she’s learning about her new coven things feel aimless. What is she trying to achieve? What is the goal? What direction are things going in?
Her dream doesn’t sit right with me.
Unfortunately I DNF at “…you will know my wrath, my queen… I will put you at my mercy and I will destroy your world bit by bit until all you have left is me.”
This isn’t effective for me because he keeps repeating himself but I have no basis to care since I don’t know their history or anything positive about him/them.
