Review #406

Overall I rated The Scarlet Alchemist a 4.6/5 stars! If I had the sequel in my hands right now, I’d be starting immediately. This world sucked me in. Sometimes I wasn’t a huge fan of the hero but that’s probably because he’s different than all the other stereotypical heroes written these days in fantasy. If this is considered young adult then it definitely has a dark and gruesome edge to it.

Zilan works with her family in a shop, where they have an illegal side business of life alchemy. It sure seems as if she’s going to raise a rotting corpse from his death if the brother pays her enough.

Why does she keep passing out?

I was getting a little bored but at the end of chapter 6 when they say get into your cages, I’m newly intrigued.

Woah. Huge twist on page 94

When they finally arrive at their destination Kylie Lee Baker does such a great job of describing the setting.

What’s up with the pearls?

What are her visions and episodes about?

I love how there’s so many instances in which Zilan out skills, out powers and outsmarts the man.

I’ve never understood villains who only want power. I just can’t relate.

So I have this weird quirk by always folding down the middle page of the book. And the half point of this book is truly a midpoint turning point that it’s almost too perfect.

The ducks lol. That’s awesome.

“At night, the palaces breathed. Jagged shadows rolled across the paper windows, formless specters whispering over the lattice.”

Some parts in chapter 21 feel contradictory for how Zalin expects Hong to respond.

Now that we know the sacrifice that comes with resurrection the stakes have been raised doubly!

I’ve never understood taste testers because if something is poisoned it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the one bite sample the servant tries.

Omg! The end of chapter 25!!!! I predicted something like this might happen but not to this character!! What?!?

Her backstory makes so much more sense now as everything comes together.

How did the Empress find out that plan?!!

There are 80 pages left and I just found out this is a duology. Aaaaah! Do not end in a cliffhanger!

The end was great. I felt a little frustrated because … without giving spoilers… what happened kind of cheapens the value of ___ overall.
