Review #591
I had a strange love/hate relationship with this YA fantasy romance trilogy. It took me 28 days to read all 3 which is crazy long for me.
The writing is definitely angsty and reminded me of the Shatter Me series author.
I’ll give this third book a 4.4/5 stars and have to look back at my ratings of the first two to see the overall average. Some chapters were BRILLIANT but it’s was dragged on too long, had too many repetitions & the reveal was too predictable.
Here’s my thoughts while reading. Be careful of spoilers:
Okay. So chapter 9 confused me because it wasn’t clear WHEN it happened. Was there some sort of secret about Iris that I’m missing?
And chapter 10 infuriated me because we’re going back to copying the Hunger Games plot points.
Also – I’m a bit annoyed that the moment Pae & Kai choose they can maybe try to be together, they’re not allowed to. Yes, that’s very intentional writing and good for creating an obstacle but they didn’t even have one literal day together as a couple before split up. So now it feels like this concept of admitting “all I want is to be with him/her” is too conveniently timed with the fact that their possible relationship is now off limits.
Okay so if I’m correct then Pae & Kitt are half siblings? Either the same biological father? And they’re betrothed lol. Ew.
Which means that Kai must have a different father for this romance to eventually work out?
Halfway through confirms that Kitt and Pae are half siblings. If her existence was such a secret did the king even know he was killed by his own daughter? Who will be the one to tell her … who in the castle knows?
Chapter 43 was all wrong. And perfect. In so many ways.
How is Callum going to end up being the villain somehow? What invisible person is Kitt talking to? What is Paedyn’s secret power?
Chapter 54 was too rushed!
Chapter 65 & 66 seem to be have put into the story backwards in editing.
Honestly this far into it, the “big reveals” are taking too long after having been obvious for a while, the pacing needs to move faster.
I recommend this series but …. Ugh. Aaaah, mixed feelings.
