Review #462
Funny Story won the vote for two separate Bookclubs in Raleigh this month so I’ll be hearing a lot of reviews soon
I rated this one a 4.5/5 stars. It wasn’t my favorite or least favorite of Emily Henry stories. I haven’t read many romcoms with only one point of view.
My random babblings (including spoilers):
Daphne and Peter were engaged, then the night after his bachelor party, he breaks up with her to start a relationship with his ‘best friend.’
Forced to move out of their shared apartment, Daphne now lives with Miles, who happens to be the guy who was dumped on the other end, by Peter’s new partner.
Both drowning in misery, Miles and Daphne are stuck together for now, for 108 days, which is when Daphne is moving away- for good.
“Miles is the kind that’s disarming enough that you don’t feel nervous talking to him, or like you need to show your best angle, until- wham! Suddenly, he’s smiling at you with his messy hair and impish smirk, and you realize his hotness has been boiling around you so slowly you missed it.”
Fake dating trope? I love it.
After chapter 8 I’m glad they they’re spending time together and I’m getting to know them
more … plus the humor is great… but what is the objective. There is no clear goal for either character so it leaves the plot feeling aimless.
Ashleigh is hilarious
At the halfway mark I’m glad that Daphne’s growth isn’t just about the romance relationship but also friendships.
I kind of wish they weren’t still making decisions based out of spite and revenge. But we’re only at the 55% mark so I get why it’s necessary.
Miles’ backstory was hard to read. Felt very real.
Chapter 26 was stressful with so many cramped unwanted guests in one small apartment.
Chapter 27 was starting to feel choppy with too many scene breaks.
It feels like Daphne isn’t spending enough time on her feelings towards Miles, even if it’s denial. She has introspective emotions about her dad and Peter and even Sadie but doesn’t spend time addressing her feelings about Miles. She thinks about his qualifies but not any emotions towards him. Is it because she isn’t even aware she has any at all? Cuz that feels far fetched.
Okay right after I typed that out she started thinking she loves him in the next chapter. But she hadn’t been thinking “like him” feelings before then.
I went from liking the book to immediate disgust at chapter 30
Satisfying ending but Miles’ ghosting/lack of response still wasn’t quite forgivable to me. That’d be REALLY hard to move past regardless of his intentions and side quest
