(Review #390)
I rated Melody of Midnight, an epic fantasy romance by Angela J Ford, a 4.0/5. It has two points of view. It’s a fast read with clear writing. Check out her other books at www.thesignedbookshop.com
Here’s my thoughts and comments while reading:
Zekiel (the King) starts off the action and dialogue immediately already prepping me for a fast paced plot with a goal to break his curse. He needs a female mortal of royal blood to aid his quest.
Celeste is running for her life. What are the shadow watchers?
Who is the sorcerer of music?
Who exactly took Celeste? It wasn’t clear at first.
Oooh… a blood pact. Sign me up!
The chapters are so short that I barely have time to settle before I’m jumping to the other point of view again.
Angela J Ford paints a very vivid picture, using all the senses to make it feel like I’m there in person.
Wait… I’m confused about the stakes if she doesn’t fulfill her contract. The threat seems to be bouncing around between multiple things. Does she get returned to the forest to her prior life or is she killed if she backs out of the deal? Then the option is brought up to give her to the Spector. It’s not clear.
Spoilers:
1. Steal the orb. But why? And what happened after she did so?
At the halfway mark I’m enjoying the mythical creatures.
But what is the growl?
What secrets is Zekiel hiding?
Why did Celeste trust a fairy?
In the span of two pages Zekiel goes from “liking her” to “falling for her” to “caring about her more than anything.” It’s a bit hard to be on the same page so quickly.
The sex scenes are so quick and abrupt. Since the book is already short I want the author to expand on the foreplay and such to create more of a buildup. Her writing is intense and vivid, so I want it extended to let me sink into the moment.
I love the harp and musical element used throughout the second half especially.
The strength of their feelings are repeated again and again. I want to know WHY they feel that way. What makes a Celeste and her spirit and personality any different than others? He has shown a couple qualities that makes sense why she’d be intrigued and fall over time. But what are hers? I don’t feel as if I know her.
At the end, I’m satisfied but wish she needed a different way to defeat the main villain since she did the same thing to overcome the demon monster.
