(Review #375)
I rated this Jennifer Lynn Barnes book as 4.3/5 stars for this YA mysterious novel
So in the beginning of The Final Gambit it’s obvious that Avery picked Jameson. But I don’t know if that’s who I would’ve picked. Will Avery change her mind by the end of this third book?
She turns 18 and is at the next step of legally inheriting 46 billion. But on her birthday Eve shows up at her front door, the true daughter of Toby. How will her appearance change everything? Is she friend or enemy?
So Avery is talking about how they’re all emotionally struggling. I understand how she and Eve would be. But the brothers sound so much more depressed or in pain now compared to the first two books when it doesn’t seem like any huge changes have happened to them, especially Jameson.
After chapter 44 I wish there was less focus on Toby because I don’t really care about him much anymore after we learned the answers in the second book. It would be much more effective if Xander was taken instead.
At the halfway mark at page 181 things feel a little flat compared to the other books. I need something big to happen soon.
Chapter 47 is confusing because it’s a flashback of something that happened between book 2 and 3 that the reader didn’t have the chance to see because 9 months went by without gaps being shown.
Chapter 52- nothing new is happening. There’s no twists or spins or intensity keeping me begging for more.
I’m so frustrated at chapter 62. I dont care about Vincent Blake or William Blake or Liam Blake and think the plot is taking a wrong turn. It feels like they’re solving the wrong mystery, the puzzle I’m not as invested in.
I liked how she finally took the game into her own hands and was the maker and controller at the climatic scene instead of the player or pawn. But the giant emotional moment could’ve been stronger. Overall I loved the series but the first book was my favorite and this third was my least favorite. I still want to read the extra bonus book that releases in August.
