Ilaria Shaye Kitarni is the sole heir to the Midorian Throne, but she will never be permitted to rule.
On the eve of her wedding to her childhood best friend, she unwittingly thwarts an assassination attempt, and is kidnapped by the Tronovians, the sworn enemy of the Midorians.
Determined to escape her captors, she burns their boat and swims to the shores of the Jungle Kingdom of Bava. But instead of getting away, she thrusts herself, and the three magic-wielding brothers who captured her, into perils sheβs only ever read about in books.
During the long trek through Bava, she discovers hidden truths not only about the people she loves most, but about herself as well.
Never trust a Tronovian. That has been beaten into Shayeβs head for as long as she can remember, but could it be, the only people she can trust, are her enemies?

How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing stories since I was eleven years old. I was an avid reader growing up (still am) and I realized I wasn’t seeing characters that looked like me. I’m bi-racial and wanted to see more female characters not only resemble me, but be someone I could relate to or aspire to be like. So, I started writing those characters and I haven’t looked back.

What is your creative ‘process?β
I love to plot and research before I start to draft. Understanding my world and the lore of the people helps me craft a very compelling story and relatable characters. Once I have all that under my belt, I start the drafting process which is the hardest part for me. I very much love the editing process of writing.

What’s something unique about your writing?
I am known for my witty banter, diverse characters, and mental health representation in my books. I think it’s important for readers to have characters to cheer on but also have someone they can relate to as well.

What is one of your exciting upcoming ideas/themes for a project you haven’t started yet?
I’ll be juggling two projects. The third book in the Shadow and Starlight Series as well as a project to pitch traditionally. Unfortunately, I can’t divulge much about that one, but it will have everything I’m known for: witty banter, relatable/flawed characters, epic adventure and swoony romance!

Who is one of your favorite heroines and why?
I really love Audrey Rose Wadsworth from Kerri Maniscalco’s Stalking Jack the Ripper Series. I find her incredibly interesting. She’s smart, ahead of her time, resourceful, funny and brave.

Who is one of your favorite villains and why?
Can I say it’s one of my characters? Niabi from the Mark of the Hunter Trilogy is hands down my favorite villain. Readers begin the series hating her but as you read through books two and three you realize she’s not wicked for the sake of being evil, she is extremely relatable and has a heartbreaking origin story. The same reasons we praise and root for the heroine are the same motivations the villain has. It’s very interesting to see how the villain and heroine mirror one another. I love a villain with depth and Niabi fulfills that.

Cassie Swindon conducted this interview. Check out one of her nine published books. The Wicked Blue is a standalone (modern) fantasy romance that some would categorize as PNR. It’s a little mermaid gender swap retelling.
