Review #565

At the end, Onyx Storm was better than I thought it’d be and I think I liked it more than Iron Flame. I’ll rate it a 4.0/5 stars. One of my biggest difficulties is Rebecca Yarrow writes her sentence structure too long and confusing. There are too many things happening at once and I have to reread things way too often because it doesn’t flow well.

The world building and politics is too much for me. For example, within 3 sentences there are 10 proper nouns:

1. Navarre

2. Holden

3. Calldyr

4. Caden

5. Talladium

6. Tauri

7. Provincial Commitment

8. Aretian

9. Basgiath

10. Senarium

It’s too much for me.

This book would be better if there were waaaay less characters.

*  I have a bunch of ramblings below or notes I took while reading that will have spoilers.

Okay the prologue was good because it focused on Violet’s goal of saving Xaden. If that stays as a primary focus then it’s positive for me.

Why does finding Andarna’s kind have any impact on finding a cure for Xaden?

I don’t remember what the Venin want? Why are they attacking?

Well … I’m glad she’s like “I’m not scared of you” even tho he’s trying to convince her she should be. But I’m gonna be pretty pissed at her if she changes her mind super quickly.

Okay. Page 37- I dont remember what any of these things mean- why he’s the speaker for Aretia, who is The Assembly and what do they want, who is rioting, who is Lewellen and Tauri. Who is Poromiel and Navarre and why will they walk.

Halfway through, I don’t think it’s a great sign that I’m waiting for it to be over… 😬 it’s taking me a long time to get through this. I probably won’t read more of the series since it’s too political, too dense & too slow for my liking.

That scene in the kitchen with Ridoc better not be foreshadowing.

I wish the forwards at the beginning of each chapter made more sense.

Did Talia know the plan of Violet poisoning their tea?

Who is the traitor? Someone is passing along info so the isles are warned about their incoming arrival. If it’s not someone important than it’ll be a let down.

It doesn’t seem like dream walking should be as dangerous as they’re implying. And I forget who else knows about Xaden reading intentions?

So… I hated That Imogen and the other one got a “climatic scene” chapter because I don’t give one fuck about them since they haven’t been the point of view the whole book. Think that was a mistake.

Seemed a bit bland that Violet didn’t turn venin after all that work up that she would. I was Fine with it either way.

I thought Jack would come back into the scene and he didn’t. So what was his purpose the whole book?

My favorite scene of the entire story was when they met the irids on that beach.

The ending was fine. Not as “punchful” as the end of Iron Flame, but that’s expected.

I can honestly say that I don’t know if I’ll read more. Depends on how long until they’re published.
