Review #543
I liked this more than I thought I would and am excited for the sequel because other than one steamy kiss there was no spice. That was unexpected. I had an internal debate the entire novel about the viciousness of the female characters competing, both appreciating their ruthlessness but also wanting one of them to show compassion as being a stronger virtue than violence.
I also wanted the king to have more chapters. The length of this story could’ve been expanded for more depth.
I give this a 4.25 but depending on how the sequel goes that may rise a bit.
Here are my notes while reading:
Ava found her boyfriend cheating on her. Of course it’s her birthday which makes it all worst. Without a future, she goes out on a drinking spree, only to find herself face to face with the king of the fae, one of her own kind. Their brief conversation doesn’t go so smoothly.
I’m glad Torin has a point of view starting in chapter 4.
There seems to be some plot holes, like
1. him offering her so much money to participate if the fae kingdom is needing money for survival since they’re running out of food.
2. Also, since he’s the king, wouldn’t he have the power to eliminate 94 contestants to give Ava a better shot at winning?
3. Since fae have magic – do none of the fae have capabilities of warming the weather or growing more food?
4. IF Ava wins the tournament, it doesn’t make sense that he’d divorce her after using some of her magic. Wont the kingdom and its magic simply die again once she’s off the throne?
There’s no chance the first obstacle in the tournament eliminated 93 contestants.
I have decided I will die on this hill… every book needs to show the total amount in the series when it’s published. For example- the first book, needs to show 1/4 on the binding. Obviously some authors don’t have it all planned out or know if they’ll continue, but it drives me absolutely insane to not know how long a series will be.
