Review #523
This one is for a bookclub selection. I’ll rate a 4.9/5 stars for What the River Knows. It’s mostly in Inez’ point of view with just a dash of Whit here and there. It reads like young adult even though she’s 19/20? I’m unsure how old Whit is throughout.
Basically, this is the first book in a long time I want to be made into a movie. I could pictures the settings and scenes and was magnetized back to the story anytime I was busy with chores or life.
I heard that some readers don’t like Inez because she’s too reckless but I loved her.
I love that there are so many different cultures and languages. Argentina. Egypt. Ancient Greece.

Here’s my random comments while reading. Be careful of spoilers.
The prologue was quite long and predictable but so well written. I’m hooked and love how much I’m rooting for Inez to go to Egypt. Though will she even want to anymore now that her parents have died?
Omg on page 36 I’m already outraged on her behalf. This is fabulous.
At the end of part 1 it seems like her uncle may be the villain? Are her parents still alive somewhere? If not is her uncle responsible for their death? What’s he doing that’s illegal? Is he truly trying to protect Inez or get her out of the way? What about Whit? Is he good or bad?
Will she get the ring back? How?
I absolutely love the concept of the magical objects and their powers.
How are her parents so wealthy? where did their money come from?
At the halfway point I’m wondering who Whit has back at home? Is he referring to a betrothed or sister or …?
The pace is slowing a bit at the end of part 2 and beginning of part 3 because it’s been redundant how much she’s not getting any answers and there are no new developments.
Best chapter to date: “Bloody hell”
I was mad that after she very consistently showed her perseverance of not giving up that Whit accused her of the very thing at the end
The epilogue doesn’t make sense but I’m excited to read the sequel!
There was so much double crossing and back and forth with seesawing loyalties that I have no idea who to believe going into the second book.
We still don’t know if her dad is alive or what parchment they’re searching for.
