Review #520

“Magic sways, like salt water on tide. I believe the Spirit is the moon, commanding the tide. She pulls us in, but also sets us free. She is neither good nor evil. She is magic- balance. Eternal.”

I rate this sequel in this finished duology a 4.7/5 stars. I liked the first one a little better because I wanted less Elm/Ione and more Ravyn/Elspeth.

Here’s my notes while reading:l (warning – potential spoilers):

Well the first 3 chapters are 3 different points of view which is very different than the structure of the first book. Especially because two are in third person narrative.

Elspeth is drowning/stuck in her Abyss for too long that it’s getting repetitive

At the halfway mark I’m sad the main love story is a different couple. The pacing is slower and I want Elspeth back.

Basically The Nightmare had her PoV and I was hoping she’d return at the halfway but it wasn’t until the end. Then she never had a full fledged “reunion” scene with Ravyn that I was waiting for.

Question- I never knew the exact age of Emory?

I didn’t like the defeat of Hauth of being too gray/abstract and not satisfying enough.
