Review #504

I listened to this on audio and absolutely loved the male narrator’s voice. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard him read something else too. But speaking of narrator I am participating in a group discussion about this topic… should the narrator represent the main character’s race and ethnicity and culture? For example- does Vanessa’s character need to be portrayed by a speaker who is Black? I feel that would be appropriate. But if so, what about when the same female narrator does the dialogue for every character? She’s obviously not a guy either? (Obviously a 2 point of view book)

I rated this romcom a 4.1/5 stars. It was a smooth read that flowed well and had the perfect amount of steam. I was a bit turned off by how many lies there were. But the stakes were indeed high since her sister was involved in the shenanigans.

Vanessa felt very relatable with having her guard up and having too high of standards for herself. I liked how she learned to give herself grace. Jason was funny with how he played along with the charades. I’m glad he found out the secret early on.

It was predictable but enjoyable and a nice palate cleanser between fantasy books. I’d read more by this author.
