Review #499

The Spellshop has a gorgeous cover and I love plants witchy vibes but this one didn’t work for me. I gave it a 3.6/5 stars. All in one point of view, Kiela flees her library job downtown to her homeland island where her parents may have left a run down cottage for her. She needs to start a new life and figure out how to survive on her own.

Here are my notes and comments while reading. Be careful of possible spoilers.

This is my first book with a sentient plant as a best friend!

Honestly it’s been a bit boring so far. Theres too many mundane tasks being explained like cleaning her house.

Chapter 8 is the first time there is any purpose or goal.

In chapter 13 I’m sooo bored. Earlier the characters were literally watching fish sizzle. Now every step is being described for all her minimal mundane movements.

Plus there are WAY too many sentences starting with a present participial phrase.

The second half was much better than the first but this still wasn’t my favorite read by any means. I’d give it a 3.6/5 stars and probably won’t read more by this author due to the style not working well for me
