Review #498
“Yes, she is a grown woman, and is that not magical in itself? To have survived this long, despite the world’s penchant for beautiful dead girls? … how romantic to die young, unstretched, unsullied, without ever outgrowing the part of the ingenue. But what happens when the girl keeps living, when she ages proudly and defiantly, without abandoning imagination, or stories, or that secret wish to find magic wherever it hides?”
The Honey Witch is my first 5/5 star rating in quite a while! I’m obsessed with how well done the forbidden love trope is written. This book had it all, witches, romance, likable characters, beautiful setting, exciting high stakes & flowing prose. I love when a third person narrative book FEELS like first person because of how well it’s written so it doesn’t bother me in the slightest which is a rare find.
“You are beautiful and full of life, like springtime.”
“Perhaps there is a reason you cannot marry the spring.”
“But I could marry you.”
“I am not married because I have yet to find someone who makes me feel seen.”
“You don’t believe I could see you?”
“No. You see only springtime. What happens when I am winter? When winter comes, you will freeze.”
Here’s my comments while reading. Warning to watch out for potential spoilers.
Absolutely loved the opening page even though I had no idea if it was considered a prologue or random scribblings.
I like the unique way the author introduced us into the new world with tension instead of meandering in
“What any woman wants for herself is not for you to decide. You would do well to remember that.”
What does Mr. Benny remember? … I have a guess
After part 1 ended I’m excited for more action to take place with more obstacles other than Marigold learning her magic.
What is the mysterious orange light in the Hazelwood forest?
At the halfway mark I’m obsessed with the outdoor screaming scene. Still unsure about Lottie, the author has some convincing to do because I think she’s the ash witch’s granddaughter.
After part 2, I’m wondering who will take care of the bees while she’s gone?
So part 4&5 flew by and I barely Wrote anything down. The quick scene with Chesha needed more clarification.
“And when I am gone, look for my in the yellow flowers. I’ll be there for you, always.”
