Review #492
I remember trying to listen to this one via audiobook but didn’t finish it so tried physical copy. This was a bookclub choice. It’s hard to place this into a subgenre since it felt like historical steampunk fantasy with vampires and werewolves. I caught myself skimming at times so gave it a 3.7/5 stars. The humor and creativity was awesome but overall was harder for me to invest in fully. Some scenes really stand out which were all the bantering scenes. Do take note that I read the whole thing front to end in 12 hours so it wasn’t boring by any means.
Alexia is rare breed that counteracts the powers of supernatural beings. On a hunt to find answers about why odd happenings are occurring, she’s mingled with Lord Maccon, the pack alpha in town. Together they save the town from a futuristic robotic villain and fall in love.
Here’s my notes while reading:
The voice is very unique and representative of the genre but there’s way too much head hopping.
Okay the vocabulary is a bit tiresome, I’m not a big fan of describing each person’s outfit and there are too many side characters. So I’m struggling a bit and notice I’m skipping exposition to get to the dialogue. So far all the characters have comical charisma which I like but it’s unclear how satirical it’s meant to be in their exchanges.
I’m very excited about the plot points of why that vampire came after her, why didn’t it know who and what Alexia was & why the hive queen invited her for tea.
Why are the roves and liners disappearing? Dead or cast out?
The soul measuring is interesting but feels like a distraction segway.
At the halfway mark the humor is the strength and the excess wordiness is the weakness.
The climatic scene was too busy for me with too much going on. It was hard to focus on what mattered.
I believe there are more in this series but I won’t be reading them.
