How long have you been writing and why did you start?

I’ve worked as a writer (magazines, newspapers) since I got out of college. I’ve been writing fiction since 2011. It started with a stock photo I saw while browsing deposit photos. The whole story of Bride of the Midnight King came to me.

What gets you in the mood to write?

I’m pretty much always in the mood to write. My “day job” as a story analyst for production companies requires a lot of non-fiction writing, so I jump on the chance to do my own writing.

What is your creative ‘process?’

I start with either the idea or a character. I do a brief outline and then I start writing. I always know where the story will end, so that keeps me from wandering too far afield.

Who do you look up to most in this profession and why?

Christine Pope, who writes multi subgenres of romance and who mentored me early on. Also Shay Roberts, who is writing an epic fantasy series that I’m beta reading. His work is amazing.

What’s one of your most recent five star books?

I don’t think I have anything under this pen name with a 5.0 rating. (I do in my romance pen name Katherine Moore). My best reviewed book is a collection of short stories called “Tales of the Misbegotten” which is a collection of Urban Fantasy stories set in L.A.

What is the most surprising thing about being an author?

The many other things you have to know how to do unless you want to spend a fortune. I’ve been published traditionally, and all you do is submit your ms, approve the edits, and wait. But as an indie author, it’s getting the cover, paying for the edits, formatting the book, and then marketing it.

What’s something unique about yourself or your writing?

I’ve lived in three foreign countries (currently live in Portugal) and I think having a glimmer of understanding of other cultures informs my writing. Plus, I’m a working screenwriter, and that’s helped me learn to show NOT tell my stories.

What is one of your exciting upcoming ideas/themes for a project you haven’t started yet?

I bought a premade cover for a “weird western” and then asked the designer for two mores. Set after the Civil War with a Union soldier turned gunslinger/monster fighter. I’ll write that under another pen name.

Who is one of your favorite heroines and why?

I really enjoyed the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich and Stephanie is one of my favorites. I love her snarky voice. I love that she has a family and friends and a complicated love life.

Who is one of your favorite villains and why?

Is the Ghoul in Fallout a villain? I love complicated villains. I’ve written books where I recast the Sheriff of Nottingham (The Sherwood Chronicles) and Mordred (characters from my favorite legends) as misunderstood. I love stories like Wicked told from alternate points of view. One of my all-time favorite plays/movies is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
