Review #469
I gave This YA mystery/drama a 4.0/5 stars. I was Supposed to buddy read it with a friend but she DNF at chapter 7 because she didn’t like the transcript things switching back and forth for the PoV since it took her out of the momentum.
I know there are more in this series but I won’t be reading those.
Here’s the blurb:
Everyone in Fairview knows the story.
Pretty and popular high school senior Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, who then killed himself. It was all anyone could talk about. And five years later, Pip sees how the tragedy still haunts her town.
But she can’t shake the feeling that there was more to what happened that day. She knew Sal when she was a child, and he was always so kind to her. How could he possibly have been a killer?
Now a senior herself, Pip decides to reexamine the closed case for her final project, at first just to cast doubt on the original investigation. But soon she discovers a trail of dark secrets that might actually prove Sal innocent . . . and the line between past and present begins to blur. Someone in Fairview doesn’t want Pip digging around for answers, and now her own life might be in danger.
My ramblings are below… (watch out for spoilers)
I love/hate how the teacher told her not to ask questions of the direct families and that’s the first thing she did lol
I don’t know if it’s important to pay attention to all the times mentioned. Like “this happened a 10:06” but this happened at 10:11.” I really hope I’m not having to keep track of that because it’s distracting.
Like the last book I read, it switched back and forth between third person in real life time and first person (diary entries) which pulls me out of the story since it’s not fluid.
The repetition of the persons of interest list is very YA…
The Calamity party just makes me
angry at teens in general.
At the halfway point the writing and logic is very YA, but I’ll still be finishing it to figure out who dunnit.
At page 226 I’m getting frustrated because there are too many characters and it’s too much to keep track of and the plot isn’t changing, it’s a constant “I don’t know” element that’s getting boring
During their reenactment of the murder night, they make so many assumptions still that they’re conclusion seems quite immature
After Part 2 ends, I’m gonna be pretty underwhelmed if the murderer is someone I don’t care anything about.
The best case scenario for a twist is that they’re both still alive or that Andie killed Sal herself.
