Review #430
This wasn’t on my TBR list. I just randomly found it on Libby. It’s a ‘dark’ spicy contemporary romance with 2 PoV that I give a 4.2/5 stars.
Here’s my notes (some spoilers):
I may be in love with this audiobook just because of the male narrators voice for Alex.
Brother’s best friend trope. I’m already getting some 50 Shades of Gray vibes but didn’t expect that from the calm light blue cover. Then I checked and there’s an updated cover that fits the mold more.
The vengeful plot fits the dark romance theme but I’m never super interested in justice plots. Alex is so dramatic and intense that sometimes it’s almost comical.
I don’t like that he’s threatening Madeline though. Just because she’s a woman, honestly.
At the 40% mark I’m happy that it’s a slower burn than I’ve expected from this genre.
I do like Ava’s personality. She’s a great balance of sunshine and feisty.
The power that Alex exudes doesn’t feel representative of his young age of 26.
Eww. Gaslighting at its worst.
Why would Michael admit all of that when it’s so obvious the room could be wired? And why hasn’t Alex attacked Michael during his confession? I’m worried that this giant scene isn’t the climax since it’s at the 62% mark of the plot.
Chapter 38-40 has been much slower and losing momentum.
Who the heck is this Ralph guy?
So the 80% mark felt a little off compared to the typical romance curvature of the story but I also appreciate the author giving the characters time and multiple chances instead of an insta-forgiveness
Sidenote- With audiobooks- sometimes it’s difficult to determine when a line is internal thought or said aloud as dialogue.
The series continues with different couples for each book.
