Review #397

I’m unsure if I categorize this as an official ‘DNF’ or not. Lemme know after reading my few comments and thoughts below.

The sequel randomly added the point of view of River, but in third person so it’s a bit more removed. I’m intrigued as to why the black bells are sounding still.

Did River ever care for Kamzin?

Will she fall for Tem?

Will Tem take The Trials?

Will they reunite with River?

Will she use her fire demon’s magic?

Will the witches overtake the empire?

Will River find the fallen star?

Well… This is one of a handful of books where I only skimmed the second half. Once Chirri had a random point of view that led into part 2 I became much less interested in the plot and the characters. I didn’t really care about the star. In the first half she and River were spending so much time apart that there wasn’t enough chemistry tension. Tem was getting a little annoying and I felt the pace was slowing too much.

I love the world building and the witches and mystery but the story felt like it fell apart and needed more strength and magnetism to it.

I gave the first book in the series a 4.8/5 stars so I felt a little disappointed after liking the other so much. Yeah, this was probably technically a DNF.
