4.8/5 stars!!! This dark YA fantasy had a bit of everything. Sometimes the rotting flesh got to be a tad too much but overall it was great.
Here’s my thoughts while reading:
That Dark Infinity starts out with a bang. A monster slayer, the Ankou, has been trapped in a curse for 300+ years by a witch. He hasn’t been able to break if and even the murderous demon whom he sends back to the In Between pities his fate.
The second point of view comes from Flora, the handmaiden to the princess. They’re good friends and both about to move onto their next stage of life through ritual ceremonies. As they share dreams of their future, the kingdom is under attack for the first time in centuries. Flora does the only thing she can think of to protect her princess, put the crown on her head and run. The bandits chase her instead, and I’m hoping she isn’t raped if your read between the lines. I’m tired of every main character being raped in books. It just shows how awful men are when every author writes about it.
Yup… she was raped by multiple guys (not shown on page). Ugh. So many books in a row have the same trauma. This one needed trigger warnings.
I love when a bargain is made. He needs her to try and help break his curse in case the prophecy includes her. She needs him to reach her better fighting skills to protect herself. So for now, they work together.
Will Flora find Beth?
What does the black mark mean?!
Will they go to the Temple of Fates?
What will the lightning mage say?
At the halfway point there’s definitely enough action and variety of monster creatures to keep me entertained.
Chapter 21 took a turn I wasn’t expecting
Chapter 24 felt like a large deviation from the plot but now it feels necessary and I understand why that bit was thrown in there.
I liked the ending but why is it shown in a prologue? Because it’s later in time? Why can’t that just be the end of the story?
