(Review #385)

I love how grotesquely disturbing the paintings all were in A Forgery of Roses by Jessica S Olson. I gave this young adult fantasy a 5/5 stars. If you like dark, gothic creepy mysteries with magic., then check out this standalone.

In a world where prodigy artists are shunned, and now even captured, Myra has already lost her parents and now may lose her sisters to sickness or poverty. Their entire futures and lifestyle have changed when their parents disappeared.

Ladyrose gel sounds dangerous but I’m eager to know more. It’s risky that Myra, an apprentice on 17 years old, is attempting a portrait for the governor’s wife. If she finds out some of their secrets she may be out of a job or the studio could be shut down, or worse.

Myra can heal a dog’s injury through magic within the painted portrait, but doing so may reveal her gifts if anyone catches her. Her good intent already makes her a likable character and she had enough of an internal battle about it for me to know how weighted the choice was.

Indeed she is caught and blackmailed to raise a young man from the dead using her same powers. An impossible task?

I can’t tell if it’s a paranormal murder mystery genre or what? Lol. Now we have suspects!!! I adore the dark vibe of the house

At the halfway point I’m wondering who this Vincent guy is? Are we dealing with another arrogant male who is trying to become immortal somehow?

What do the found letters and lists mean?

Her decisions in chapter 34 didn’t make any sense.

Just when I think it can’t get any more intense… it does.

The epilogue leaves room for a potential sequel
