(Review #384)
“Ink Blood Sister Scribe” by Emma Torzs was a 4.4/5 stars for me! Overall the level of magic and world building felt like it had vibes similar to A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross but the setting and timing were not comparable. I liked the second half more than the first. This is a story for you if you like book themed stories with multiple points of view.
Here’s my thoughts while reading:
Joanna’s father Abe is found dead outside his home with a book in hand. I have so many questions. Did the book he held cause his demise? Why shouldn’t Joanna let her mother in? Let her in where? Why will the book impact her blood? Did he know what he was doing?
I need to know about this mirror magic.
So some Nicholas has a POV in chapter 5…How will Nicholas’ story intersect with the sisters?
I want more answers soon about the wards, why they matter, why her parents fought about the books so often, etc. the pace is a bit slow and I’m finding myself a little bored unless more information is revealed.
At the halfway mark I’m more interested. Why was that hidden area hidden from Nicholas?
Is the uncle evil?!?!?
What information does the mom know that she’s been forced not to talk about?
After part 1 is complete, it’s crazy that all three characters don’t know who to trust.
At chapter 20 I’m getting a little irritated that I’m being dragged along without answers sprinkled along the way. There are only more questions being piled on which is a little exhausting since previous bits aren’t being let go of or loosened up so it feels like I’m holding onto too much at once.
Spoiler: At the end of part 2 when the shocker “found family” secret is revealed it feels a bit too coincidental that Richard has access to two Scribes through his relatives, now through marriage.
Were any of the silence spells/NDAs voluntary?
The big explosive scene was satisfying and I’m happy with the ending too.
Spoiler: It was never fully explained how the magic works. How do they come up with the words to write in each spell book? Do they make it up?
