(Review #373)
I give this adventurous YA contemporary “mystery/romance” book a 4.7/5 stars. It has a little bit of everything. All written in one point of view, until the epilogue, you go through Avery’s perception of this life changing event.
Avery is a junior in high school who is accused by her principal for cheating because she got a perfect score on a very difficult test.
Her big sister is re-entering an abusive relationship so for now Avery is sleeping in her car. All she cares about is graduating next year and earning a scholarship for school.
A random guy asked Avery and her older sister to come to the reading of his grandfather’s will because apparently she needs to be there for it to be read.
I’m the beginning it’s been a bit tricky to keep track of all the Hawthorne family members and who is blood related and who isn’t. I’m searching for a family tree now.
So Avery is the heiress but must live in the Hawthorne House for a year. Apparently it has a layout of a labyrinth.
The big question is WHY did this old man leave everything he owned to Avery?
These four grandsons all have distinct personalities and seem magnetic in nature, with or without their money.
But apparently, the last girl who was too drawn to them & spent a lot of time in the Hawthorne House had died.
It’s a bit weird that the author is showing some little signs of attraction when it hasn’t been established yet if they’re related.
“This place isn’t normal, and you’re not a player, kid. You’re the glass ballerina- or the knife.”
I love all the secret tunnels and passageways.
At the halfway mark I’m a little mad that she’s starting to be attracted to Grayson too. Not because I love Jameson but because Im not a huge fan of either yet.
I’m super glad that she lied to the press about knowing why the guy chose her as the heiress. It’ll change everything.
I have so many questions:
Who is after Avery the most?
What do their middle names mean?
What kind of person is Rebecca?
Who can she trust?
Why is Avery so set on keeping the money instead of giving a tons to each family member, she will still have more than enough for her own needs.
How long is the probate?
What happened with Emily?
Why don’t I like Alisa?
I hope Oren doesn’t betray anyone
Why is Max ignoring her?
I flew through the second half without stopping to make comments. Honestly, Avery was still a tiny bit annoying so I want her to come into her own more in the sequel, but I’m starting it right away.
